Midway Independent School District is moving forward with a major $14.5 million athletics expansion at Midway High School as rapid enrollment growth and rising participation in sports programs push existing facilities to their limits.
The project is designed to address overcrowding at the school, which has become one of the largest high schools in Central Texas with more than 2,700 students. District officials say the expansion will provide additional space for athletes, coaches, and extracurricular programs while preparing the campus for continued growth.
The planned 23,000-square-foot addition will include a new gym with seating, upgraded locker rooms, team meeting areas, and film study spaces. The improvements will primarily support the Midway Panthers athletic programs while also creating dedicated areas for volleyball, wrestling, cheer, and dance teams.
School leaders said the expansion is needed after years of growth placed pressure on existing facilities. With multiple teams competing for limited practice space, the district has faced challenges scheduling workouts and providing adequate resources for all student-athletes.
Midway Athletic Director Brad Shelton said the project will help solve long-standing facility issues, including the lack of a third gym and dedicated spaces for some programs. The improvements are expected to benefit a wide range of students beyond football, despite the sport receiving much of the attention because of its strong community following.
The expansion is part of a larger investment plan by Midway ISD to modernize campus facilities and keep pace with enrollment increases. District officials have said the school could surpass 3,000 students by 2030, making additional infrastructure essential.
Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with completion targeted for summer 2027 before the start of the new school year. Once finished, the upgraded athletics complex will provide Midway students with more opportunities, improved training environments, and facilities better suited for one of the fastest-growing high school programs in the region.
